Puppy Pen & other favorites

This is Valentino "Blue" a puppy I fostered this spring.  I borrowed this plastic pen and put it in the middle of the kitchen.  It was perfect.  I started out putting newspaper on the floor but found out it I took him outside every two hours he did not have accidents.  It was great to use because he was always in the house where all the action was. I don't know if this was a dog pen or a little kid playpen.  Maybe check out ebay or your local Goodwill store.  It was really worth it.   Oh, a little puppy info for you first time doggie owners.  The rule of thumb is they can hold their urine for the number of hours they are months old.  A two month old pup should be able to hold it for 2 hours.  Always take them outside right away when you take them out of a crate, when they wake up from a nap and after you play with them.  And...if they wander off, go get them fast as they are looking for a spot.

My favorite puppy care book it "THE PUPPY PRIMER", BY Patricia B. McConnell.  Patricia McConnell is a dog behaviorist out of Madison.  She uses all positive training techniques and has a wonderful sense of humor.  All of her books are good.  They are small paperbacks, well written and a fairly fast read.   This book and several others can be purchased at HAWS (Humane Society in Waukesha) and also can be ordered on Amazon.com.

Taste of the Wild has a new puppy food out.  Taste of the Wild is a grain free diet and rated 6 stars by dogfoodanalysis.com.  It is one of the most economical grain free diets.  Lori sells it as well as better dog care stores.

To help with puppy mouthiness and  teething I recommend bully sticks and  doggie dehydrated sweet potato fries.  Rawhides are dangerous as they are not digested.  Always supervise your puppy with a chew.

Red Kong - it is a rubber toy, I smear a couple tablespoons of canned dog food in it and put it in the crate with the dog when they go in at night or when I leave the house for a few hours.  It is very exciting for them to lick the canned dog food out.   The rubber is indestructible.  This is the only toy you should put in a crate with your puppy.  If you put a stuffed animal in, they may ingest some of it and you may end up at the emergency vet.

Natures Miracle (or similar product)- this is a spray you use if your dog soils on your carpet, it is an enzyme cleaner that will remove the smell so you dog does not return to the same spot.

15 foot training leash or 15 feet of clothesline- Dogs need to run.  If you don't have a large fenced in backyard, go to a park or field and let them run dragging the long leash or clothesline.  That way you can grab them quick if need be.  Remember a tired dog is a happy dog.

ID TAGS - can be made with your phone number on it, no need for a name if you haven't picked one, Petco has a machine that makes them while you wait.  All of the puppies will be microchipped when they are spay/neutered.  There is a one time microchip registration fee of around $20.00 to register the dog.

Stay tuned.........as I think of more recommendations I will post.
