Week 1

Baxter has settles nicely into our routine here.  He spends his day hanging out with us enjoying a few pets, walks in the yard and curling up next to feet when we lay on the couch.  He is easy in the home as he doesn't bother anything.  Not a chewer.  We have walked around the neighborhood a couple of times and he does well.  He is still cautious, taking a step back with quick moves and loud sounds but is much better.  I have to say, he loves, loves women.  I just have to laugh evey time he meets a new one.  Even when meeting them for the first time, he is right next to them enjoying the attention. Men take a minute or two but then he enjoys their pets.  He will give out a bark or two when my teenage son comes downstairs (my son is loud like a bull and a china shop) but then his head in his lap for affection.

As fosters, we sometimes envision the type of home we see as perfect for our foster dog.  I try not to do this too much because I could limit the homes for him but currently I see him in a quiet home with a single person (male or female is fine) or with a couple without children. He would be gentle with children but the added noise and activity wouldn't be the best for him.  We did have lots of people in and out this weekend and he did ok but I noticed it was harder for him to relax. My neighbor even said ........ wow, he will be a perfect dog for someone who's kids are gone an are looking for a loving, calm companion dog.

I think Baxter would be fine with a household where his people worked.  I always recommend crating a dog until you get to know them but think eventually, he is a dog that would not need to be crated when you leave the home.  He also is a dog that does not need lots of exercise or space.
